NATIONAL PROGRAMS

Seniors Program

At NAMF, we recognize that a large portion of the Muslim community is made up of seniors, and meeting their needs has become a prime focus for our organization. NAMF’s Senior’s Club was developed in 2009 as a place for seniors to gather and socialize, with activities that included picnics in the park, and trips to Blue Mountain ski resort and Niagara Falls. Due to the overwhelming positive response and increased demand from seniors and their families, we at NAMF realized that such programming is extremely necessary and of great benefit to the community. A seniors’ peer support group was then launched, allowing seniors to be advocates and leaders for themselves. Our work with seniors has also included a community research study performed in partnership with Ryerson University’s G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, which resulted in the first Canadian study on the social and emotional needs of Muslim Seniors. Future endeavors include building a NAMF seniors home that will cater to Muslim seniors to provide quality health and social care within a halal environment. Services will include a prayer area, halal meals and culturally-sensitive activities. Today, NAMF remains committed to developing age-friendly programs for Muslim seniors, in order to increase health and wellness in the aging Muslim community.
